If only there was a word in our language’s vast lexicon to describe the obnoxious sound of moody poserdom in a way so succinct that its meaning was 100% clear to even the most dense reader. Slunt. Not quite slut, not quite cunt; how witty. Do you hear the clarion call of this word and its implied pretense? Are you a rebel bitch who wants to tell those nasty boys how it really is without buying into the whole women’s movement thing? Ladies, if Avril is not hardcore enough for you to express your most base sexual deviance but you are frightened off by those crazy dykes at the Lilith Fair, then Slunt have your bag.
Are they blatantly ripping off Courtney Love’s vocal style and the general approach of Hole? Why yes, but Slunt manage to cheapen even that pedestrian example of vaginal rock by positing the argument that of paramount importance to all a good rocker chicks is first: stupid clothes and second, what other women look like and who fucked who first and better. For a mental image of this tripe, imagine if you will The Distillers’ Sing Sing Death House stripped of all integrity, talent, and punk, then add a dash of musical small man syndrome. Bam! Like some Italian cooking show gone horribly wrong, the market is flooded with another bowl of bitter tasting crap.
Under the assumption that all things must have some redeeming quality, perhaps a few layers can be stripped away to reveal an element of worth in Get a Load of This. Is there at least a musical backbone under that image? No. The tempos are stale, the riff work is bland and awkward in many spots, and the bass is non-existent in the mix. This gimmick laden promotional device for the woman who hosts “Metal Makeover” is rated toilet paper by Patrick Dawson.
