Review of Every New Day - The Shadows Cast

I can see my metal credibility dropping with every time that I voluntarily listen to this album. Every New Day is a melodic hardcore band out of Canada who sounds like many of the other bands that play this style of hard music. Take the following ingredients: fast, melodic riffs, cleanly sung vocals with a touch of “emo”tion, and well-tread lyrical content about feelings and such. I really don’t seek out this style, bands like Thursday and Thrice and Underoath, not because I don’t like the music, but because I feel that I can find the elements that I enjoy in greater intensity from other bands. That being said, I can confidently state that Every New Day is near the top of that heap.

The Shadows Cast is the 3rd release by this threesome, and they’ve been successful enough to tour the US. The production is just what this type of music demands. The guitar tone is crisp and mildly-distorted, like a good melodic death sound, while the bass is heftier than usual. The vocals are pretty routine as I could easily confuse him with more than a handful of other singers.

At times they’ll throw in less-common elements like gang vocals, which pop up in a few songs, and the stringed section (violin, viola, I never can tell) at the end of “Ashes Fill the Air”. “Final Breath” opens on the strength of a leftover In Flames riff, and then they play the start of what could be a nice solo a few times towards the end, but overall, one of the better songs. “Our Hearts Bleed” is just a well done modern hardcore song with a solo that rises above the rest of the album. “Long Drive Home” is bouncy and carefree enough to easily see play on mainstream radio, while still having moments that catch my attention. On the other hand, they are not invulnerable to the sappiness, as “One Day Older” demonstrates.

I don’t really have too much to say about these guys. They play a saturated form of heavy music, and they play it by-the-book, but they play it pretty damn well. Normally I’d casually dismiss a band like this, but Every New Day are doing something right to capture my attention. For that, they’ll get my recommendation…to the Thrice set of readers, of course.
