Born From Pain are a fairly mid-paced act playing early 90's NY influenced hardcore while still deriving slight influences from metal. Albeit, they sound nearly identical to bands of the aforementioned genus, one of the more interesting factoids regarding the band is they're actually from The Netherlands. Since the album's release in 2003, they've toured with Terror, Shattered Realm, and Madball. Needless to say, you should have some sort of an idea as to what to expect out of Sands of Time, which is just now being released in the United States by the renowned Black Market Activities label.

A major attribute about Born From Pain that distinguishes them from similar bands is the amount of time changes occurring within each song. The band maintains their heaviness even during higher speed songs like "Return", which still reverts into chugging colossal breakdowns and later presents an actual guitar solo. Their mammoth vocals could most closely be compared to Hatebreed - rhythmic and burly with regularly-arranged gang-shouted refrains. While most of the riffing is pretty standard to American hardcore, the metal influence shows mainly through the some of the guitar solos and interludes, which usually have some sort of delay or echoed effect added. Although it's not bad, I'd like to hear the band go further with this concept or abandon it all together.

With a running time of 31 minutes, Born From Pain prevent themselves from releasing an album that drags on for too long and grows tiresome. It's not a perfect album, but it's an effective dose of what it is. Sands of Time comes recommended to the few people out there who might actually remember how tough metalcore once was, and not what it's turned into.
