Rice On Suede

Pure ferocity and speed from beginning to end. Completely incomprehensible vocals, blazing blast beats and sheets of molten riffs. Violence, death, hell, pain, torture. In other words, brutal death metal. Which is one of my favorite kinds of metal. All the people who bitch when people review styles they hate should be forewarned: it’s not better when you review a style you like. In fact it may be worse.
So, trying to be as objective as I can, this album falls squarely into the second tier brutal death slot. Bands like Howitzer, Krisiun, Hate Eternal, stuff like that. It follows the Psycroptic formula to a degree, but somehow the impact of it is blunted a bit. Just a bit. These guys masticate anything in their way, fitting enough groove into the mix to keep things from getting too puréed. If anything is lacking it’s that ephemeral spark that marked Spawn of Possesion or Psycroptic’s records last year. Considering the niche thee band is playing in, that almost seems a ridiculously petty complaint.
The production doesn’t stray too far from the mean. Everything individually sounds kinda’ thin, but as a unit space is filled. The vocals are maybe a bit higher than is preferable. When you are basically vomiting there is really no reason to mix it high. Are you afraid people will miss the nuances? The snare is a little thin, the bass has that almost Korn-ish pluck to it. The musicians all play their shit with a will and a talent.
But then I like brutal death metal. For the average metalhead, this is a damned good record, but if you are looking for BD, I have a few others I would recommend first. This record does kick ass, even if the humor is at the Billy Milano level. I would recommend it, especially for lovers of UZIcore like me.
