It’s not often I find myself coming across a monster death metal relapse like In-Quest has granted us with their latest offering Epileptic, and when this hit me like a ton of severed heads, I was a bit unprepared. All I really knew about the band is they were garnering some hype and had managed to get Sven of Aborted fame to handle the vocals for their latest album. Needless to say, In-Quest lives up to the hype, shreds it to pieces, and tosses it to the ground like the petty peon it is.
In-Quest manages to toss together a foreboding mixture of crushing death, a tad of melody, a shit load of meat, a dash of epic, a spit of groove, and a bit of mechanized electronic goodness. If any of you have heard Aborted you already know what to expect on vocals, a guttural growl and menacing screams, but Sven also manages to toss in a little extra with some haunting spoken word and some shouting vocals as well. Toss all that together and you already have a winning package in the vocal department. But, we can never forget the thick and hearty riffs of Douglas and Jan on the axes. Throwing out meaty metal breakdowns fueled by blast beats and earthquake inducing bass drops, melodic and epic solos, and some damn fine death riffs. In some ways I was almost reminded of earlier Zyklon where they followed a more black/death approach as on World ov Worms. And to entice you even more, there is a bit of mechanized electronics and haunting space type keyboard sounds. Don’t fret though, never do these take a primary part of the precious death metal offered. Instead they add to the package and give you something more to absorb and enjoy. When you take all of this and toss it into a pot together and mix and master it to its full potential, you get the final product with a crushing display of metal production finesse. Everything is mixed damn well, the drums simply pound you into oblivion, especially those double kicks, and the guitars wholeheartedly annihilate you with their powerful performance.
In-Quest has surly released one of my favorite albums of the year up to this point. Epileptic is metal as hell, catchier than the black plague, and just damn solid. Now do yourself a goddamn favor and buy this album.
