Exclusive Track Premiere

Shakhtyor - Handschuhmann

After debuting in Europe late last year through Cyclone Empire, German doom trio Shakhtyor have announced that their self-titled record is finally making the trip Stateside via Metal Blade Records. The four-track disc will hit shelves on August 20th, and Last Rites is proud to present an exclusive cut, "Handschuhmann".

At a shade under eight minutes, "Handschuhmann" is the album's quickest burn, but it doesn't sacrifice the band's sweeping drama for relative brevity. Opening with a lumbering, Kenselian stomp, the band wastes little time in rumbling its way to a quaking boil. The riffage turns toward sludge at the track's midpoint yet remains crisp and measured, bolstered by a sobering vibrancy and crucial tone.

This voiceless trio shares a spiritual kinship with some of the acts on Supernatural Cat, but manage to reside in an comfortable Goldilocks zone: More measured and fleshed-out than Zolle, more stoic and earthbound than Ufomammut. Dexterously, Shakhtyormanage to avoid the trappings of like-minded doomsters; they don't merely string riffs together, nor do they allow themselves to careen skyward in fickle flights of impulse. They drive, they dig, and they deliver.
